Yesus “Naik” atau “Terangkat”?: “Karakter Ilahi yang Tersembunyi” dalam Kisah Yesus Terangkat ke Surga

Carel Hot Asi Siburian, Christian Roy Panggabean

Abstract

The Ascension story independently appears only in the Gospel of Luke 24:50-51. However, editorially the story also appears in Mark 16:9-20 and Acts 1:6-11. The main issue in this article is the question of Jesus “ascending” or “being taken up” to heaven. The polemic that arises is to question the exact position of Jesus when it is said that He returned to heaven; as a direct subject or as an object. This problem arises because the Greek word used in the three texts above is passive, where all possibilities lead to the conclusion that Jesus is the object who was taken up to heaven. This is even though the current understanding is that Jesus ascended to heaven by His power. Through this article, using the method of analyzing the Greek word “ascending”, a construction of thinking will be built that the power of Jesus being lifted to heaven did not originate from Jesus. Jesus was lifted by a hidden divine character and this indicates that Jesus in Himself did not have the power to lift Himself in His ascension story.
